Being a Ref Helps!!

I have recently been doing some of my hours and picking up tips on coaching by reffing soccer games. I feel that being a ref has helped me learn new things about the different styles of coaching such as an attack minded style and a balanced style. I enjoying being a ref because it gets me out and helps me with volunteering but not just that being a ref has allowed me to discuss with my mentor what makes some coaches good and successful and what doesn't work for some coaches. I was a referee at a U-16 girls game the other day and it so happened that it was my sisters team and while I was reffing I actually noticed things that I thought could have helped the team. After the game I actually discussed with others what I thought could have been done better and they agreed. Just by getting out I am learning new things.

Blog 9 EQ

1. I reviewed the rule of three for writing an EQ

2. Review the Following EQ's
a. Does not meet the Rule of three because it does not provide a depth of research, and it is not specific.
b. Does meet the rule of three requirements because it shows us that the person knows specifically what they want to do and they have researched on what they want to do.
c. Does not meet the rule of three because it is to general and does not seem as if they have enough research.
d. Does meet the rule of three because it is specific and focuses on a certain aspect that they want to research.

3. Based on the rule of three write another draft of an EQ for your senior project.

Blog 8 Research and Working EQ

1. What is your working EQ?

How can a soccer coach lead his team to a successful U-16 or U-19 season while keeping the team well trained and disciplined?

2. What is a possible answer to your EQ? Please write the answer in thesis statement format?

Lead the team by showing discipline and understanding. By doing these things the team can function well together and build chemistry needed to win a championship. The coach needs to show the team the right character and mentality in order to lead his team succesfully.

3. What is the most important source you have used that has helped you come up with an answer to your working EQ?

The best source so far has been the book i am reading Coaching The Mental Game it has been the best source because it provides many examples and different points on how to correctly manage a team.

4. Who is your mentor, or where are you volunteering, and how does what you are doing relate to your EQ?

My mentor is Ron Martinez and and I am volunteering at AYSO it is a youth soccer organization. What i am doing relates to my EQ because i am learning from different coaches how to manage a team and learning their own ways to successfully win a season.

Blog 7 Independent Component 1 Approval

1.Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

For my 30 hours of mentorship I plan to continue to play soccer for my team in Covina, and I also plan to referee a few games at the region i volunteer at. I am going to do these things for a couple of months till the season has ended.

2. Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

In order to meet the expectation of showing evidence for my 30 hours i will be providing photos of the games that i am playing in and i will also provide records of my performances in those games. I will also try to get the opinion of my coach on how i am performing.

3. And explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.

If i continue to play soccer and referee games I hope it will allow me to better understand what the coaches are thinking during games and what decisions do they have to make during games. Also I hope by doing these things I will be able to see a different perspective of the game not just the player because having done research and read books already i have been able to see the difference already so hpefully by being out on the field i will truly understand it.

Noticing New Things

Thursday I was at my latest soccer game and the game had just ended and I had just noticed that some kids hadn't played at all during the game. I went up to the coach and asked him why he hadn't played some of the kids and his answer was we needed to win the game. This made me think about the book Coaching the Mental Game and it talked about it shouldn't be all about winning it should be about putting in a team effort and getting the kids to enjoy the time they have as a team. I didn't want to say anything because I would have felt weird but I will next time because it really isn't fair.

Blog 5: Project Reflection and working EQ

The Pentagon:
(1) Positive Statement: So far i have had one positive encounter. That encounter happened when I was walking through the soccer field and a parent came up to me and said thank you for organizing the scrimmage game against my sisters team. I felt great about it after because it felt good to know i was helping other kids do better.
(2) EQ Content: the one pice of research that has really helped me better understand my topic is the article that talks about coaches and the leadership throughout the team. This piece of research has helped me because now i see the way people step up on a team to try to make others better and not just helping themselves.
(3) What has worked for me so far has been the people trying to help make my senior topic better. When i let people know what i am doing as my topic they try helping me by giving me tips and ideas to better help me understand my topic.
(4) One thing that has not worked so far has been finding quality research. There is research available but i am not able to find research on what really helps a coach make his or her team successful.
(5) Finding Value: In what ways can a soccer coach be successful and a good leader at the same time?
I have not found a mentor yet but i have emailed soccer coaches at Cal Poly and i am waiting for a response.

Always Coaching

So last night I had a soccer game and I know my senior project isn't playing soccer but it was during the game that i noticed something odd that i was doing. It was almost the end of the second half and my coach decided to pull me out and give me a rest but i wasn't tired so i went and sat down by the coaching box. After a few minutes i couldn't take just sitting there anymore so i stood up and started pacing the sideline. I then noticed something on the field that I didn't like so i started yelling to some of the players and they actually listened. Soon i found myself directing players around an my coach looked at me and he goes " am I the coach or you". he didn't say it in a bad way more sarcastically. I then caught myself and realized that i had payed so much attention to coaching that i was out for 15 minutes. I then went back into the game and I left with the thought that coaching just comes naturally to me.

Blog 4: Interview Preparation

1. Who do you plan to interview? Why?
I plan on interviewing Robin Cruz. He is a soccer coach that i have known for years who has coached multiple teams and once played the game himself. I plan on doing this because i know he has a lot of experience and can be very helpful in giving me information that i already don't know.

2. You have to ask 5 questions. What addiitional questions do you plan to ask?
I was planning on asking 3 additional open ended questions.
  • The first would be, what is most important in being successful in coaching youth sports?
  • The second would be, Do you have a different way that you approach each team?
  • The final question would be, What is it about soccer that makes you love to coach the sport?

Blog 3: Soccer Coaching and Semester 1 Eslr Goals

1. Soccer Coaching

2. What do you plan to do this year to show growth in each of the ESLR's?
  • Ipoly Citizen: This year I plan on joining committees that can help me get more involved with school activites such as I-Fest and Scare Fair because in recent years i have not shown much enthusiasm in participating in school events.
  • Effective Learner: This year I plan on keeping my work up to date especially in class that i would have much trouble in such as physics because i have had trouble keeping up with all of my work and i need to learn to stay on top of it and make sure it is turned in on time.
  • Effective User of Technology: This year i plan to use technology more frequently then i have in the past because i have found that technology is a great way that helps me learn new things and is effective on time management especially when it comes to meeting deadlines for homework or projects.
  • Effective Communicator: This year I plan on being an effective communicator among my classmates in activitie's such as model assembly, and participating in class events. I plan on doing these things because i always have a strong opinion but i am never able to voice that opinion so this year gives me the opportunity to do so.

4. The most important thing that I learned from this experience was to find the correct style of play to use in game situations that help win games. This helped me understand how to utilize the players talents to this style of play to help the team win.
